My dad was a cabinetmaker- self-taught- and darned good. I grew up with the concept that it was always better to buy the best quality and if you couldn't afford to...then you'd be better off waiting 'til you could. My mantra has become... Buy the best; Cry once.
I teach Graphic Design (Graphic Arts) in the high school I attended. I was originally hired as woodworking teacher but quickly found that after working on 100 projects during the day, the last thing I wanted to do was go home and do some more. In 1982 I switched to Graphics classes and have been in heaven since.
It was college that opened my eyes to the stockpiles of under-utilized machines in my area. Between classes (or instead of classes) I'd hitch up with a friend and cruise the brownfield regions of Trenton, NJ in search of treasures. The college's shops were filled with Oliver and similar machines and these masterpieces gave me a frame of reference for what to look for.
Following college I did a stint in a patternshop and worked side-by-side with 65-year old patternmaker. In addition to the work at hand, we also maintained an huge shop filled with pattern equipment that one could only imagine. There was just the two of us and it was all ours (so to speak). It was better than being in a museum... it was like living "in" the zoo... these beasts were alive and I could use any of them! Once again, the machines in this shop served as my "Magnetic North".
Today my wife and I share our house with two sons (12 & 9) and bunch of chickens, rabbits and other assorted pets. We run a furniture building and restoration business on the side and do quite a bit of work for several local businesses, as well as area families. In addition to these daily duties, I've finally collected enough blacksmithing equipment to fire up the forge and my sons and I have stayed up late several times this summer "playing with fire".
