Comments:
These are a engravings "lifted" from John Richards 1872 book "A Treatise on the Construction and Operation of Wood Working Machines". Richards has many patents credited to his name while working with the J.A. Fay Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1860s, but none of their machines are featured in his 1872 book. Instead, many examples of another Cincinnati firm, Lane & Bodley, are given, including some beautiful engravings.

The first machine featured a graduated stroke of the chisel and a hub dividing/indexing head.

Lane & Bodley also built a No. 6 Model for rail car mortising. Note the additional boring auger, too. A side-bar on the engraving claims that 1500 of these machines are in use
