This lathe orinally came out of a silt mill near Harrisbug, PA and has been in its present position for a number of years. The massive machine is held up in the air by three thin cast iron legs. I'm sure many got damaged by diagonal pressure knocking the legs out from under them.
Jeff Joslin's detective work finds an ad for this maker's lathe from an 1849 Scientific American. http://owwm.com/MfgIndex/Detail.asp?id=1305
