Originally built by the Syracuse Sander Co. in the 1920's, this machine has been produced under a variety of names besides Porter-Cable. Engelberg, Sundstrand, and Acme all built the machine with few changes up through the 1960's.
This machine was found in Trenton, NJ in a brownfield-area machine shop. I had purchased a bandsaw from this same shop several years earlier, and this random stop proved to be just as fruitful. It also turns out that the shop foreman was a neighbor of mine that I had never met.
The original 3-phase motor was replaced with a 1-horse single phase motor using a lovejoy connector. Belts are ordered through Industrial Abrasives in Reading, PA and last a long time. The sander can be raised to be in a vertical position and came with a sturdy tilting table, much like a 6x48 sander today would have. I have not been able to locate a table yet..... I did see one at an auction recently, but later found the sander it had become separated from.
