Comments:
This model was first developed by Syracuse Sander and kept in the bullpen when Porter Cable took over in the mid-1920's. The D1 15" disk sander featured a self contained dust collection and bagging system through the implementation of cast vanes on the backside of the sanding disk. As the vanes spun inside the cast shroud of the machine's frame, air was pulled through two ports-- one at the top of the disk and one at the bottom of the disk, both behind the covers/guards. Exhaust air and dust was then forced out a hole in the bottom rear of the disk's shroud.
This machine is missing the proper table, table support arm/trunnion, and single mounting post. I have seen several sanders in a similar state, so I can surmise these parts either failed, or were set aside from the machine to do full-disk abrading, and then were never returned. I'll eventually fabricate a better table arrangement than what is on the machine presently, but it is a second sander and not a priority at this point.
