Bio

I was born in the mid-20th. Century to poor sharecroppers. I realized quickly that this was no way to make a living and became a draftsman for an architectural woodworking company.

I first became interested in woodworking from working with my Dad. At one point in our lives we had a small cabinet shop in Missouri.

I met and married my wife (early 60’s vintage) in the mid-80’s and we were fortunate enough to have a daughter. She’s mid-90’s vintage and as of this writing a first grader.

Enough of the boring stuff.

My interest in vintage woodworking machines really started after I’d bought my Unisaw and set out to find out its age. Up till this point I aimlessly bought machines and while I hadn’t done too badly I wasn’t entirely sure what it was I needed to look for.

After the Unisaw I began gathering up old Deltagrams, catalogs and brochures, mostly Delta but later on any machine ever made prior to 1980. Since then I have expanded my scope of interest to include selected newer ephemera with the thought that “some day it will be old”.

In 2000 I had the bright idea that people might want to talk about old woodworking machines and maybe, just maybe, a forum should be set up to do so. I pinged five friends I’d met from rec.woodworking who had similar interests in vintage machines and after a brief discussion it was done and the Old WoodWorking Machines forum was on the air.

As of this moment in time I can say I’m done gathering the necessary machines to fill out the shop. That out of the way I can concentrate on restoring the ones that require restoration (almost all of them) and I can begin the process of upgrading where needed though I’m not entirely sure where up is. Having a basement shop has its limitations when it comes to serious iron.

Machinery Owned

What follows are the machines that have taken up a more permanent residence in the shop. I am not noting anything rat holed here. We don’t have the time.

1939 Delta Unisaw: This machine was restored in January/February 2001. In 2002 I fitted it out with a Biesemeyer Home Shop fence and built a side table/outfeed table.

1940’s Delta DP-220 Bench Top Drill Press: One of the first machines I’d bought back in the early 80’s. It’s a user and could stand to be restored but works fine as is.

1950’s Boice-Crane Spindle Sander: A machine I’d always wanted and a more recent acquisition. I got this from a retired patternmaker. It came with factory stand and most of the spindles.

Late 50’s Delta 6” Jointer: My first machine bought on eBay. It has the Art Deco cast iron stand. It was restored in 1999.

1950 Delta 8“ Tilt Arbor “Junior” Unisaw: An estate sale find and in perfect mechanical condition. It is on the short list of things to do but the short list doesn't appear to be getting any shorter.

Late 50’s Delta 6” X 48” Belt Finishing Machine: Another eBay buy but only after no one bid on it and I made a deal with the seller after the auction expired. It’s also on an Art Deco cast iron stand but is cosmetically challenged. As for mechanical soundness, It’s hard telling if it ever saw any real usage. I do need the cast iron back panel for the stand and the motor needs some looking at by a competent motor man.

50’s Craftsman (Parks) 12” X 4” Planer: This machine was gotten for around the cost of a portable planer. It needs a more fitting stand but otherwise it’s a solid user.

1948 Delta 24” Scroll Saw: A gift from my Dad that needs a factory stand to make it complete.

Unknown Vintage Delta DP-220 Floor Model Drill Press: Actually, I have two of these. One has the older 30's vintage round base and the one has the *newer* tombstone base. Between the two I’m expecting to be able to build one complete machine and I’ll part out what’s left. I also have the foot pedal for this.

1950’s Craftsman King-Seeley 9” X 36” Wood Lathe: My very first vintage machine. I’d bought this at auction back in the late 70’s. I don’t think I’ll ever part with it despite having a larger lathe.

1948 Delta/Milwaukee 14” Bandsaw: When I went to pick up one of the floor model DP-220’s this poor guy was peeking out from the shadows. I struck a deal on the spot for it and brought it home. It’s just this side of sad bastard and is on the short list.

1950’s DeWALT Model MB 9” Radial Arm Saw: Another rummage, another machine.

1965 Delta/Rockwell 12” Disk Finisher: This was an auction buy. It has the original motor and sits on an original stand. Condition is very good.

1940’s Mead 1” X 42” Bandsander: I literally stumbled across this at an auction, bid on it, had no one counter and I followed it home.

1960’s Oliver No. 159M Lathe: The *M* classification means this was originally fitted out for metal spinning. It was gotten at auction and gotten after very little resistance, which was odd, since it only lacked the tool rest. It has the rest socket and tail stock. I need to re-do the ‘lektikals and re-motor it before I can use it. It does suffer from a *brush and go* paint job but otherwise, it’s one solid dude.

Acme 2C Edge Sander: This was bought and restored in 2002. While it's not real old it's a solid user. The last thing to do on it is re-work the tables.

I also dabble in Stanley R2D2 dome top routers. I have a few. The rest of my portable power tools are of a more recent vintage and run of the mill. I do not own any stationary machine built after 1965.

A list of the machines currently under my care but also under consideration for long term ownership:

Powermatic 90 Lathe: It's missing the tail stock, rest socket and rest. It's currently fitted out with a 3-phase motor. If I can bring it back to user condition it will be in serious contention to take up the space currently being taken up by the Oliver.

Delta 10" Tilting Table Saw: This one is being rat holed for the time being. It's status has not been decided.

Delta Belt Driven 12" Disk Finisher: This was found at a auction and was literally a basket case, in fact I hauled it home in the basket it was found in. At the auction there were some missing parts which were found and collected up with the machine prior to bidding. The last part, the arbor assembly, was bought in another lot by my friend Dean Gebhardt who realized it was *my* missing part. All that was left were a couple of tightening knobs and other small parts which were already in one of my rat holes. The machine is from 1939 or the very early 40's and only one of two that I've ever laid eyes on.
