From January 1959 Popular Mechanics

Dosch Mfg. Co. was established in 1906 or a bit earlier to manufacture tools: a miter box, a patternmaker's hammer, a floor scraper, a lathe tool. None of these are of interest to this Vintage Machinery website.

In 1958 the company introduced a universal miter trimmer that had been patented in 1900 by Peter Dosch of Mount Vernon, NY, and subsequently manufactured by a firm started by Peter Dosch, the Lion Machine Co. Peter was apparently committed to a mental institution in 1929 and the Lion Machine Co. was taken over by relatives. Some kind of intra-family dispute occurred and as a result the Pootatuck Corp. also manufactured the miter trimmer. We do not know how the Dosch Mfg. Co. is related to Peter Dosch, nor what connections there may be to Lion and/or Pootatuck.

The Dosch Mfg. Co. ceased production in the late 1970s when the owner died.

We have seen some more modern-looking miter machines that were branded Dosch but are actually rebadged machines from Spanish maker Orteguil S. A. These are good quality machines but are outside the scope of this website which does not yet include machines made in Spain.

  • For more on this maker, see the text accompanying a Photo Index entry of an early Dosch miter trimmer. That entry is for a very early Peter Dosch trimmer that seems to have been manufactured for Dosch by Smith & Egge Mfg. Co.; likley shortly before Lion Machine Co. was established. All this information came from miter-trimmer expert Jeff McVey who was working on a book on that subject but who died before the book was completed.
