No Known History. Came from EBAY, Seller neglected to pack it properly and it broke. He gave me a full refund but I would have preferred an unbroken trimmer at full price.

Thanks to Jeff McVey for providing info on this trimmer. This is the text he sent:

I have a very similar trimmer. However, mine is missing the crack, and it still has the data plate which identifies it!

Anyhow, it's a Dosch Speed Trimmer. Now, Peter Dosch started Lion Machine Co, and built the Lion Trimmers. He ended up in the looney bin around 1929, and the company was passed down to some relatives. I haven't figured out the exact history, but there was apparently a family split somewhere along the way, and identical trimmers were built - some marked "Lion" and others marked "Dosch", by two different companies. It's my guess these "Speed Trimmers" may have been the first ones built under the Dosch name, before they decided to go ahead and make one that was identical to the Lion (as the patent had expired long before).

On the other hand, maybe it was an attempt to build a better model. However, the familiar Lion trimmer design is pretty hard to beat! It hasn't changed much in over 100 years!

The data plate on Jeff's trimmer reads:

Dosch Speed Trimmer
Manufactured by
The Smith & Egge
Mfg. Co.
Bridgeport Conn USA

This corresponds to the S&E on the bottom of this trimmer.

One curious fact I stumbled upon is Peter Dosch was a witness of record on William Fox's patent #504,209 in 1893 for the Fox 4-E and 6-E trimmers.
