Vintage Sheldon Metal Lathe
My neighbor helped a friend clean out his garage in Orange, CA. His father had died and he said he could have anything he wanted in the garage for helping. He brought home an old metal lathe and put it outside under the eaves in his back yard in Riverside , CA.
I was over there one day and saw it, and being in maintenance my whole career, I hated to see what was happening to the lathe so I offered to buy it from him and make a project of restoring it. We plugged it in and everything seemed to work as far as I could remember about a lathe from my Machine Shop days in High School.
It turned out to be a Vintage Sheldon 11” X 34” 1943 Lathe with a Quick Change Feed Box, a 3 speed ABC Box, and a clutch in the Apron to provide power feed to the Carriage and Cross Slide through a Cone Clutch. Ser# KQ7111
I started dismantling, scraping, cleaning, stripping, Ebaying for missing or needed parts, painting, and rebuilding.
I have purchased enough tools to begin most projects. It came with a 3 jaw chuck and a chuck for the tail stock and several other minor tools. Everything is in top shape. I replaced the motor that was on it.
It is now completely restored and I guess I will have to sell it. It is in the middle of my garage and I really don't have room for it. |
