Offered for sale is a large antique metal planer manufactured by New Haven Manufacturing Co. of New Haven, Connecticut, likely dating to the late 19th century (circa 1880s–1890s). This is a true traveling-table metal planer (iron planer) with a stationary cutting head, representative of the heavy industrial machine tools used in American machine shops during the line-shaft era. The machine retains multiple original cast-in maker’s marks reading, “NEW HAVEN M’F’G CO MAKERS NEW HAVEN CT.”
The planer features a table measuring approximately 36 3/8 inches by 16 3/8 inches, not including the small end trays or extensions. It is of heavy cast-iron construction throughout and retains its original open gear drive system, traveling table, and stationary tool head. The machine also includes its original overhead countershaft arrangement, flat-belt drive system, and a period wood-faced pulley. At some point in its working life, it was adapted to electric motor drive while retaining the original shaft-and-belt configuration.
Included with the machine are the original clamping bars, planer dogs/stops, and additional workholding fixtures and clamp plates used for securing work directly to the planer table. These accessories were located with the machine and appear to be part of the original working setup.
The planer is offered in unrestored, as-found condition. It is not a barn find, having been stored for many years in a dry, working machine shop environment. The major components appear intact and complete, showing only the wear expected of a machine of this age. The machine was reportedly in operation within approximately the past fifty years, although I have not personally run it.
This planer came from the shop of my late father-in-law, who was a Mechanical Engineer by profession and a longtime hobby machinist. The machine remained in his working shop alongside a matching New Haven Manufacturing Co. engine lathe and was preserved as part of a well-equipped traditional machine shop.
Asking price: $1,500. Buyer must arrange all loading, rigging, removal, and transportation. This is an exceptionally heavy machine and appropriate equipment will be required. Additional photographs and videos are available upon request. |
