Machine Type: Drill Press
Machine Description: 63-1M
Owner: Erik Sandell
Manufacture Date: Early to mid 1940's
Notes: Source=owner’s submission. Owner’s comments: I purchased this 15" Atlas drill press off of Craigslist for $350 in 2019. The drill came as a bundle with various other attachments and tools including: an Atlas cross slide vise, mortising bit set, numerous shaper bits collars & adapters, pin punches, and router bits. All this came inside a cool old tool box that also contained some original instructions and sales brochures from when they were purchased. Everything is vintage, most are unused and inside their original box, some even include their sales price tag still attached, imagine $1.50 for some high quality steel shaping bits! One Stanley brochure is even stamped with: C.W. Marwebel Tools Metals Industrial Supplies 1235 Mission St. San Francisco 3 Is that a single digit area code!? Based on research I think my machine dates in the early to mid 1940's as this is when Atlas starts to advertise a 1M series to their model 63. It also has the earlier version of head that Atlas produced with sweeping lines instead of the more "boxy" style that distinguishes models of the late 1940's and onward. Some of its distinguishing/interesting features are: 3 hole arrangement on base, square on/off plate, knurled depth stop, original paint in good condition, missing spindle cover, arc of shame Some questions I have are: I think 1M models were supposed to come with a morse taper, mine seems to have a Jacobs style chuck? The motor that it came with has no markings or plates anywhere on its exterior, it also needs a new cord and to be rewired to the drill and switch. Would one be better off cleaning and rewiring the old unknown motor to the drill or finding something different and known to power the drill? Is anyone able to ID what brand of motor I may have? Are Atlas serial numbers chronological? Mine seems to be fairly low in the range of serial numbers stored on the database here. Could this potentially date it more accurately or as an older model? Any additional info people may have related to the drill or accompanying bits would be greatly appreciated! This restoration project will be my introduction to vintage tools. I am looking forward to cleaning and getting this beautiful machine up and running again in my shop.
