This is a Canedy-Otto #34, based on information supplied to the owner by another old tool enthusiast. Canedy-Otto is best known as a company that made drill presses and blowers for blacksmiths, but their floor standing drill presses also show up frequently in WWI vintage photos of machine shops and woodworking factories. This example is still set up for a flat belt drive - although an electric motor has been fitted to replace overhead line-shaft power. According to information received (not direct observation), the machine "has 10 inches of quill travel [and] there are babbitt bearings on the upper shaft and bronze bearings on the spindle. The only ball bearing on it is the thrust bearing on the spindle. It has a counter-weighted spindle [with] the weight inside the column. You can see the chain if you look closely."
