Comments:
This machine was in an antique Charlton, Massachusetts house that had been taken back by the local bank. A bank official--who has submitted photographs here in the past--offered this in trade for a donation to a local charity.

Easy to load, not terribly heavy, this appears to--and may well be--a good user machine. Interesting design features include the attached countershaft--which adds some good bgottom end weight--the idler/ tensioner/guide system for the headstock drive, and the sliding dovetail tailstock. As received the lathe has a four jaw chuck and a shop made turning rest.

GT & D made this lathe for a small number of years only. It had come to there business, it is thought, from the aquisition of the FE Wells Company, that had designed it originally. Some examples of this style lathe are marked 'Wells,' this one is thought to be only 'Greenfield Tap & Die Corporation.'

My route in driving this machine back to my home took me through Greenfield, Massachusetts, so I stopped there--where the lathe was made (and a favorite town of mine for visiting)--and had a hamburger. I knew people who worked at GT & D.

The bed is stamped C4-10432 on the headtsock end, possibly the serial number.
