Comments:
We have no great interest in old machinery or the use of this jointer and our intentions are to sell it. However, we do understand that others might appreciate this information. It is a part of history and with the thought that the next owner may not be so inclined, we feel that we should pass on what we can.

This is a circa 1955 Shopmaster 6-inch jointer, model number "JO 400".

With the unexpected death of an uncle, my brother and I inherited this jointer in 1971. We suggest that it is circa 1955 because of other documentation that was with it.

This machine had very little use prior to our receipt of it and other than using it one time approximately 14 years ago to re-dimension some used framing lumber, it has been in storage ever since. It is in excellent condition.

The body of the jointer is painted metallic green. The cutterhead guard is painted red with the Shopmaster logo "embossed" in the casting and painted silver.

The infeed and outfeed tables are cast iron, each measuring 16 inches in length, with a total working table length of 34 inches. Both tables have adjusting "knobs" that provide from 0 to 1/2 inch cutting depth. The blade guard is cast aluminum and allows for quick removal.

The fence is cast aluminum, center mounted and measures 3-3/4 inches x 20 inches. It adjusts in/out, up/down and tilts out 45 degrees with one-degree increments marked. The fence is designed such that as it is moved across the table it covers the cutterhead.

There is an "embossed" part number in each casting that relates to the units "JO 400" model number. Example: The cutterhead guard part number is "JO 404", the fence part number is "JO 405", etc.

The cutterhead is 2-5/8 inches in diameter, with a 2-inch pulley and permanently lubricated ball bearings. According to Shopmaster, the recommended cutterhead speed should be approx. 4,325 RPM. It has three Wisconsin Knife Works knives, which are the original knives. They measure 6 inches x 11/16 inch (approx.) x 1/8 inch. Knife adjustment is accomplished via adjusting screws.

I contacted Wisconsin Knife Works, but they have no record of Shopmaster, Inc.
