The machine is a belt drive, originally equipped with a Marathon 7.5 h.p. 3-phase motor for the cutter-head (4 knife). I converted the machine cutter-head motor to a 5 h.p. Baldor single phase. The second motor, driving the infeed rollers, was a Reuland .33 h.p., 900 rpm. 3-phase. Per Jeff at Northfield, the slowest rpm single phase motor on the market is a Baldor 1100 rpm motor. I swapped this motor as well, although I was disappointed with the infeed rate (speed); too fast for my taste. So, I re-installed the Reuland 900 rpm motor with a TECO 50 VFD. I'm very happy with the result - my infeed rate is now variable speed (I plane figured wood; the variable speed is very useful). The second picture (rear view) shows the new Baldor motor, and the VFD mounted remotely on the wall next to the planer.
