THE HENDEY MACHINE CO. was a major manufacturer of metal working machinery, primarily metal lathes and metal shapers and most "old machine enthusiasts" assume that HENDEY never manufactured a wood lathe, however according to the company history as documented in http://www.lathes.co.uk/hendey/page2.html the first substancial order the Hendey brothers received was for 20 wood turning lathes in or about 1871 or 1872. I don't know if this machine was part of that order or if it was manufactured at a later date, however it is a wood lathe and there are no signs of it being made from parts of a metal turning lathe. All parts match up perfectly and it is quite apparent that this machine was designed to turn wood. The tailstock has a very nice lever operated cam action locking mechanism and the tool rest support is secured by means of a hand wheel under the bed which clamps the tool rest support to the underside of the bed. The bed is cast to read "THE HENDEY MACHINE CO. TORRINGTON CONN. USA" This lathe was restored by AMERICAN MACHINE of Shelby NC.
