The jointer was found on craigslist and was listed by a cabinet shop. The owner bought the jointer in the 1970's from some folks who had been making airplanes in Alpharetta, GA. It seems to be fairly complete and reasonable shape for its age. The base had a little extra rust on it from sitting in wet saw dust. The infeed adjustment wheel is broken, safety guard is missing and one or two knobs are missing.
When I first looked at it, I thought it was a 12" jointer that someone along the way had converted to an 8" in the process of possibly changing out the babbit bearings. The tables are 12" wide and the cutter head is a massive 8" wide, 5" diameter cylinder with a 1-7/16" shaft mounted in SKF pillow blocks. But, today I measured the base, which is 17 x 32 and it matches up with the description of "The Porter 8" Type A heavy pattern jointer" shown in the publications for the company.
We used a walnut log to test it out. It took 30 seconds to come up to speed but plowed right through the log producing shavings almost an inch long and a very nice cut on the log. From the looks of the capacitors, they may be the problem with the startup.
edit 03.15.2010. In the process of striping and restoration, a date was located....1905. It was stamped on the table supports.
updated 7/16/2011 Finally finished the jointer. It has a Wagner 3 hp 3 ph motor run on a VFD. The table tops and fence were blanchard ground. The stand was custom made and can be found on google sketchup. search on "Porter Mobile Base"
