I purchased this machine from a local plywood processor on 8.30.2008. I had called the seller, about another machine - and he mentioned he had a table saw. Some e-mail passed back and forth. The make and model were identified. The price was good. After some deliberation - relating largely to my own committment to the pursuit of larger and larger machinery in the face of less and less actual woodworking - I decided to buy.
This machine is quite heavy - about 1800 lbs - without the feeder it came with. The entire base is a single casting and about 1/2" thick. Inspection on-site revealed no significant defects and the bonus of finding the original miter gage, surty guard, and learning the saw was equipped with a 6" dado arbor. Several blades for the machine were also found.
The first three pictures are as found - and in the process of unloading. I hope to post some "after" shots once I have done some restoration.
I contacted Northfield, which is still in business, and got this response:
"Mike:
The saw shipped from our plant on 03/26/1953 and it went to Lentz Millwork
In Granville, Wisconsin. We had not heard from it until now. It was a standard
saw with a 5 HP motor and 1-1/8” Arbor and a Surty Guard. The 4 in the phase
box is a mispunch. It obviously should be a 3. It sold originally for $1,081.25
and we have never sold it any parts.
Surty is out of business, so if you needed a new guard you would need to put
Our Lexan guard on it. To view it, you could look at our current brochure for
#4 saws on our Web site – www.northfieldwoodworking.com.
You can order parts by calling us at 507-645-5641 - We accept Visa, MasterCard,
Discover & AmEx.

I was impressed with Northfield's desire to register all their old machines, and the personal service they extended. In a subsequent e-mail, I learned that the cast iron dust cover on the arbor side of the saw was replaced with the present cast iron version in the late 1950's. It would be intersting to see if we could determine what year through our registry here. In almost all other respects, the saw offered today is identical.
