This machine was acquired via an IRS (Industrial Recovery Service) auction in February 2006. The machine came from a Drexel/Heritage or Henredon furniture plant in North Carolina. The jointer was sold through Norment and Lambert of Lenoir, NC - an industrial machinery supplier still in business as of December 2007.

The IRS listing stated the 1 HP motor was 220/440 volts - 3 phase, but instead was 550 volts - 3 phase. A local motor shop rewound the motor for 220 volt - 3 phase service. The original motor color was found under the brass badges and a close color match was used when repainted. The existing Allen/Bradley manual starter was used. The rewound motor drew more amps; therefore, NOS N17 Allen/Bradley heaters were used in place of the original N10 heaters. The original fused 3 phase disconnect was not used because the jointer is powered via a rotary phase converter that feeds a breaker protected 3 phase sub-panel.

The jointer was completely disassembled and components were either cleaned by abrasive media blasting, electrolysis, sanding, or chemical stripping. All components were surface prepped, primed, and then painted with Valspar implement paint in Massey/Ferguson grey/gray with added hardener. The Massey/Ferguson color was a very close match to the original paint found under various badges.

The table surfaces suffered from abuse and neglect and regrinding was considered, but the defects were superficial and do not affect the machine performance. If reground, the matching serial number (to the manufacturer's tag), on the rabbeting ledge would have been lost.

The 4 inch dust chute was well fabricated of heavy gauge steel by the previous owner and was painted the machine color and reinstalled. Chip collection is adequate coupled to my 2HP cyclone.

The existing motor bracket was simply 2-inch angle iron welded to flat stock and then bolted to the base. A new motor bracket was fabricated from a pilfered knitting machine motor mount. Existing split sheave pulleys were used on the cutterhead and motor.

The oiler sight glass for the rear bearing oiler was broken. New oiler sight glass and neoprene seals were ordered from McMaster/Carr. The cutterhead bearings were in good shape and not replaced. The 3 knife cutterhead is 4 inches in diameter with massive knife gibs. The gibs and cutterhead are number stamped to retain the correct placement in the cutterhead.

A mobile base was fabricated from 2-inch square steel tubing, flat stock, and angle iron. Casters rated at 500 pounds were added after the base was powder coated. The belt guard was fabricated from steel sheet stock, in-filled with flat expanded metal and then powder coated. The Amish business - Cattail Foundry of Gordonville, Pa, fabricated a replacement cutterhead guard of aluminum to replace the broken original. The replacement cutterhead guard and the original rear cutterhead guard were also powder coated.

Restored: 2007.
