In my wanderings around likely places where I am liable to find North American wood work machines, one place I keep going back to is Dales Brothers in Pinetown South Africa. They have regular month end machine auctions and though I am not able to see what is on offer every month end ( live too distant away), I am sometimes pleasantly surprised to see what is on offer on out of the blue visits. Like this old Tauco / Delta combination which is of pre-WW2 vintage. The exact date of manufacture is unknown, but it is most likely 1937-1940.
The stand has been greatly modified from the original but retains the functionality. The Model apparently is a 458.
It consists of a saw, a drill mortiser, a jointer. Bearing the Tauco badge would be correct for South Africa of that period as wood work machines were wholly imported by independent distributors then.
For those not familiar with the machine, the foot pedal (not original in the picture) when depressed, turns the shaft which has a chain sprocket affixed to it. The sprocket in turning pulls the chain attached to the drilling table. The chain is spring loaded. The drilling table is now drawn by the chain towards the drill bit. On release of the foot pedal, a return spring pulls the table back. The drill bit holder is attached to a separate shaft which has a pulley. The pulley in this set up is driven by a separate motor which sits on a plate and is tensioned by the pull of the spring and chain attached. To operate the saw the drive belt is changed to the saw pulley. See the back view.
The jointer clearly marked with a circular Tauco badge in this unit is driven off it own motor. The motor here was a Delco (USA made). One would think in the original set up there was only one motor and the shaft had a separate drive pulley to operate the saw or drill mortiser. There was no label to be found on any part of the machine apart from the Tauco badge and below the half moon blade guard on the saw, DELTA is cast in the saw frame.
