Happened onto the OWWM website and was fascinated how many people bought ol arn to restore and use. The price of new tools combined with my Scottish heritage for thrift, naturally led me in the direction of seeking and restoring some tools lacking in my shop.
My Taiwanese drill press motor had fried itself, so I was in the market for a new drill press. Found this one at an auction in the fall of 2005. When I got there I found that this and some other tools had been contributed by a next door neighbor; he had some tools from his dad stored in his basement for 20 years and needed to get rid of them. It was a Craftsman and the appearance wasnt too badrusted base and column, which was to be expected in a humid basement. The handles were intact, the chuck spun freely and it was powered by a 3/4 HP 1750 RPM motor with adjustable speeds from 650 RPM to 5000 RPM. After waiting most of the morning and afternoon, they finally got to the drill press. Another man and myself were the only two bidding; his last bid was $45, I took it home for $50. The operating manual was in a ziplock bag lying on the drill press table. Its posted here at OWWM as well.
After a complete disassembly, soaking, using Castrol Super Clean, and plenty of steel wool, it was ready for repainting. I used Dupli-Color Gray Engine Enamel (Wal-Mart, OReilly) and it worked great. Have been using it on a regular basis since. A great find and much needed addition to my shop. Thanks to the restoration portion of the OWWM site, it was valuable in stepping me through the process.
