Purchased off Craigslist for $75. Nice original condition only some slight surface rust. The seller a soon to retire union carpenter told me it was purchased new by his grandfather. I estimated it production date by the phone number on the Machinery dealer tag "Force Machinery Union NJ MUrdock8-6979". Force is still in business. They are a Delta dealer, among other brands, in North Jersey. They have been in business for years. My Dad bought his Delta Super 990 there in the late 50's. I missed one of these with the Force tag on E-$@# a few months ago, but I was pleased to find this one. The casting on the left wing reads, "POOTATUCK STRATFORD, CONN. If anyone would be so kind( Jeff, are you reading this) as to help me date this, I'd be grateful and be sure to update the listing with the info.
Update 3-13-2007
Thanks to Jeff McVey for getting back to me on dating the trimmer. I'm told the trimmer was produced prior to 1956 when Pootatuck was sold and moved to Shelton Conn. The next piece of info Jeff gave me answered a question I had about any relationship Dosch and Force may or may not have had. There is another listing for a Dosch Custom Cutter 2271 Route 22, Union NJ on the nameplate. I thought it odd that Force sold the Pootatuck trimmer when Dosch manufacturing was in the neighborhood. As it turns out the Dosch Custom Cutter was produced by Force after they bought the Dosch Company in 1958. 2271 Route 22 is the address for Force Machine.
Thanks again Jeff, I am looking forward to reading the entire history of trimmers when the book comes out.
