This is a photo of a Niles & Co. Vertical Boring Mill made in the mid 1850's
At that time Niles called them Horizontal Face Plate Lathes.
Niles made their first one in 1840 of 7 foot swing and then one more in 1845 with a swiveling head.
By 1855 Niles was making five different sizes.
They were designed by Leander H. Corey, the superintendent of Niles.
The picture was taken by Fred Colvin of the American Machinist Magazine.
Shown below is an 1855 ad for the machine.
