Comments:
This Burke Number 0 (zero) mill was my Great Uncle Ed's. I had stored it in my shed for some 30 year +/-. When I disassembled it the original scrapings were still visible on the ways and other sliding parts. The bearings are in pristine condition and there are 2 arbors, One that holds a cutter and a second arbor with spacer collars for mills.
There is very little information available about the number 0 mill. On some of the photos the table has an integral trough around it. This one does not have the trough. I believe the trough was on the early models and the table without the trough was later but I cannot verify this. Any information would be appreciated.
There is a screw that can be set to limit the table travel to the right but there is no stop to limit the travel towards the left and the table can travel far enough to the left for the rack attached to the underside of the table to become disengaged with the driving gear. There does not appear to be any holes for some type of stop to be attached. The models with the table with the trough had a threaded rod with nuts to attached to the right side of the table to set the limits of travel both to the right and left. A number 0 mill is posted on Practical Machinist and has a table with a trough and has Conneaut, Ohio on the casting. Any information about the table travel stops would also be appreciated.
The original information indicates that the machine would have had a 3 step pully for a flat belt. But maybe they had v belt pulleys on late models????
Most of the original printed docs that I have found indicate Burke Machine in Cleveland, Ohio. This is machine is from Conneaut, Ohio which dates this mill after 1911 until 1948 (assuming the mill was still being produced in 1948). On this site there is page 133 from the 1941 revised Burke price list that indicates the Burke Number 0 mill s=was still being produced with cone pulleys.
Any further information would be appreciated.
An update: On the sliding table there is a stamped (engraved/embossed) in an outline of an oval,
THE INDUSTRIAL
T. D. & E CO.
DAYTON, O
I cannot find any reference to this company. This would probably help date the mill.
