Purchased for $50 from northern MN, USA in homage to my blacksmithing ancestry. Fully functional and all parts included. History is unknown but I'd like to know more.
I want to restore it *without* painting it. I would appreciate restoration advice. In particular, how to remove what may have been an original rust preventative wax film (did they used to do that?) applied over all surfaces below the top of the yoke which seemed to attract decades of gunk, and replace it with a non-paint, original appearance option to prevent rust. I plan to install it in conditioned space in my home office.
The photos show the drill in its current state after I've spent about 15 hours of painstaking manual, non-chemical removal of about 1.5 lbs of gunk that literally obscured the raised bevel gear lettering, the spindle body's cast ogee features, and much of the bevel gear teeth and the spindle's acme threads.
I can't get the main spindle, the drive nor the table pivot shafts disassembled. They appear to be heat shrunk/press fit into respective mating parts? There's mushrooming on all exposed shaft ends as if pounded into place.
