Comments:
from the estate of an elderly friend, can not find provenance. he text on the chuck says Stedy-Chuk Mfg by R J DENIO GLENDALE 1, CALIF, the wooden box, which may be original has an LB embossed in it and a stencil saying STEDY CHUK No 2 Morse on the narrow side There is no patent that I can find, though an Robert J Denio of Modesto invented a notepad holder patented in 1934 (pat 1971600), and a Robert J Denio of Kerman Ca invented a synchronous clutch in 1912 (pat 1043406). I haven't found any relevant information. whatever it was for, it's certainly unusual.
The postal code Glendale 1 provides some sort of clue as to the age, postal zones were started in 1943 so the collets date from then. Wood collets seem like they would damp or absorb some vibration and provide a softer grip on fragile materials but as far as a specific application I don't have a good guess.
Number 2 Morse taper with no provision for a drawbar
