My friend Todd tipped me off to the CL ad for this machine, knowing that I had no resistance to small, home-shop drill presses. I had been looking for this one because of the terrific head/belt shield. I am a sucker for funky styling. The machine is complete, though the quill crank is not original. The brass bushings/bearings are nice and tight and there was not much to do beyond disassembly and cleaning and painting and lubrication. There are no aluminum parts, making this different from the other Shopmaster machines I have have encountered. Additionally, the machine tag and the 1960 catalog in which it is found identify Monticello, IA as the manufacturer's location, so this might not be the same Shopmaster as the Minneapolis company. The styling is vastly different than earlier Shopmaster machines; an effort to update the look, or an entirely different company? A little more research is in order, or at least a conversation with Jeff Joslin.
Dorr D. Beale, the president of Shopmaster (Minneapolis) wrote a biographical account of his business life, which is available through used book sources. I think I should buy that book; it might have answers.
The drill press was originally painted in what appears to be the same green as the Minneapolis-made machines. I chose Rustoleum rattle-can hammered brown, with Hammerite light hammered bronze accents, brushed on.
The Powr-Kraft motor that came with the DP was probably of the correct era, but I chose not to use it. If I ever actually use the machine, I'll mount a 1/3 hp, 1725 rpm motor, as recommended by the manufacturer.
The original price was $59.95, according to the 1960 catalog.
