I acquired this machine in 2003 through an on-line IRS auction. It came out of the old Empire Furniture Plant in Johnson City, TN. According to the plant manager, this saw was among the first set of tools acquired by the old Empire Company when it set up their "new" factory in 1930. Sadly, the plant was being closed in 2003, a victim of the vicious furniture import wars.
These old Model Js have a really graceful base casting. I had planned to make this my primary saw, but shortly after acquiring it, the Great USGS Heist occurred and the Oliver 260 found its way into my shop. So, now the Tanny sits patiently and awaits the day when I have more room...
