I was actually looking for a mid sized wood lathe and a few other things to add to my recently growing shop of mostly wood working tools. I had been accumulating tools all of my life, but since I retired the year previous (2015) I had been gathering steam for a woodworking hobby I never had time to fully develop. A friend of a brother in law's friend had "this old lathe in his barn that he's been trying to get out of the way". His father had purchased it many years previous, but never got it running. "It's pretty large and takes up a lot of room" he said. He added that the fellow "figured it was worth about fifty dollars in scrap metal price". It was only a half hour away so I thought it was worth the drive to take a look. I called the guy and made an appointment. He said I wold need to bring a good trailer. When I got there he had it sitting already on his forklift just inside the doors of his equipment barn. "Uh", I said, "That's a metal lathe. Did you say $50.00?" "Yep, but you have to take all that crap in the boxes too." It was on my trailer and I was gone inside of twenty minutes.
On close inspection I found that virtually everything that was supposed to move didn't. I performed some basic and light cleaning and soaked it down with copious amounts of PB Blaster, covered it with a tarp and let it sit a while.
***UPDATE, 3/13/2017
By December 31 2016 (We traveled over 10 thousand miles with our camper in 2016) all the non parts that hadn't moved did, a temporary motor had been mounted. I had everything working but determined that the spindle bearings were too rough to use. On new years eve I began a down to the metal paint and restore process on the lathe. As of 3/10/17 it's done.

Barn find. This is the day I brought it home. Still well worth the $50.00 I paid.
