Comments:
I acquired this machine with a lot of help from some OWWM buddies, from a foundry on Chicago's south side that was liquidating. From all appearances it had not been used in a long time. The machine was in very good shape under all the dirt and grime. There is some staining on the tables but no pitting. This is a very heavy machine, the infeed table is 17" wide and 4' long. The outfeed table is 3' long. I gave it a good teardown and thorough cleaning, but kept it in the original paint which is in good condition. This has a 2 knife, babbitt bearing cutter head with round caps and square head bolts. I considered upgrading to a gibbed head but the existing one is in excellent shape and I have two sets of spare knives for it. The drive is 4" flat belt. I acquired a 3 HP 3 phase GE motor to run the machine and added all new electricals.
there are a few other jointers like this one, listed under Superior Machine Works. All of the other jointers under Jones Superior, all look different and have the base cast as a single piece. So perhaps this is a transitional machine from when the company was in the process of changing its name and product line.
