The saw was purchased in the fall of 2004 over eBay from the original owner. He used it in a wholesale plastic distribution business to break down sheet goods for customers requiring custom cutting services. Unfortunately, even using a blade developed especially for this material, plastic tends to shed lots of little half melted flecks that stick rather tenaciously to everything. Needless to say, the inside of the saw was all gummed up and it proved to be quite a task to get all that "stuff" out of there!
By the time I got all of the plastic scraped out, there was not much paint left on the inside of the machine. So I went ahead and refinished it complete, inside and out using a scanner derrived paint mix. Northfield provided a complete set of decals and safety stickers, all of which helped bring back the saws original look. Other than a good cleaning, greasing, etc., the saw required no basic repairs or parts replacement except for one weld to repair an injury to the cast aluminum throat plate. I am missing the Surty blade guard originally supplied with the machine and hope to find a good replacement.
The saw is equipped with a Louis Allis 5-hp 3-phase direct drive motor and Furnas electricals. Louis Allis was one of several motor suppliers used by Northfield from the early sixties until they recently switched over to Baldor. On this Louis Allis motor, the motor shaft and arbor shaft are one in the same piece of steel. It has a 1-1/8 arbor that cannot be changed, according to Northfield, other than by switching out the motor. The newer saws with Baldor motors have interchangeable arbors of differing diameters and length, including dado arbors.
