Comments:
Late 1930's lathe purchased at auction with no available history. Very good condition was well cared for. Very similar to Atlas and other Sears branded lathes, but has several unique characteristics. There are no identifying marks or numbers cast into parts. There is a very lightly stamped number 2800187 on top of back rail at tail stock end. This number has resisted all google and patent searches. There are no holes where a badge would have been attached, no remnants of label.
9" throw, 30" between centers. Total lathe bed length 45" at base and 41" at ways. Blue paint, which I believe is original.
The headstock is open in the back and underneath. There is no hinged lid. Headstock is apple shaped with indexing set screw at 9 o'clock position as you look at drive spur. Small oil zerks (small ring with springed bearing) just above front and back bearings. Bearings are needle bearings with felt washers. 3/4" 16 tpi spindle. Reverse threads on outboard side. 4 step pulley.
Tail stock is strongly rocket shaped, very slim at waist and fully enclosed front and back base with round knobbed lever to tighten through bolt from base. The lever is on the user side. Spindle lock is centered on top on a small raised area, again with knobbed lever. Spindle ram screw advanced by large knobbed lever
The base is ogee shaped. 41" long at ways, and 45" long at base. 2" gap between rails. Continuous bed (no gap between headstock and rest of lathe). Headstock is bolted to bed ways.
Motor is Genl Elect 5KSA47C1. 1/4 hp last patent date 1923. If not original to machine, it is certainly period
Any help with positive ID greatly appreciated.
