Comments:
Recently acquired from an antique store. It appears complete and nothing is broken or froze up. It matches up to the patent # 99803 drawings which are dated Feb 15, 1870. From the historical data, it appears Edward J Worcester was in business from 1873 to 1883 in Worcester, MA. He had worked for other drill makers prior to this. There is no raised lettering on the castings and I had no idea who built this press until I started to clean the chuck. That's when I found the following:
E.J.Worcester
Maker
Worcester, Mas
Pat Feb 15 1870
This is the first photo entry for this maker, so I'm assuming not many were sold. The advance arm assembly is unique to this drill and can be set for fast, medium, or slow advance speeds depending on the material being drilled. Flywheel is 17" diameter. Photos are in as-found condition. I plan to clean this up and display it in my basement office.
After closer inspection, I found two six sided screws that are probably replacements - one is in the chuck and the other in the spindle.
After you look at these pictures, take a look at Steve Baum's Boynton and Plumber number 2 post drill. You will see the upper and lower castings look very similar. Since both manufacturers were in Worcester, MA, I'm guessing B & P may have bought out or taken over the E J Worcester patents. Any information to validate this would be welcome.
