Comments:
This was better known as a Human Powered Drag Saw and is the general design of Marvin Smith’s 1882 patent and has the exact log clamp of Smith’s 1890 patent. The tensioner for the free end of the blade is marked “Patent June 3, 1902". This tensioning device was patented by Frank Pahls, of Chicago. There's no one left to describe how well it worked in the woods in an all day job. Probably not all that much better than what we call "Old Gappy", better known as the crosscut saw. In older times I remember seeing one man sawing the crosscut without much effort by taking the handle off the other end.

Comments: You can tell by the worn paint on the handle that this saw was used.
