Purchased in fall 2012, from an auto shop owner on Lake Erie who had it for >10 years, but never got it running. Mechanically in good shape but covered in many layers of painter OVER top of dirt and shavings (a real mess to clean up).
Cleanup was with a wire brush, angle grinder and tons of solvent. That left about 2" of junk on the driveway and some unhappy neighbors.
Fortunately there were no major mechanical issues, just clean, lube and lots of fine tuning.
It has been converted for large wood turnings at low speed with a router mounted on the cross slide.
Its in my shed, mounted on 12" concrete footings, held by 6' long square steel tubing.
10" riser blocks give me about 30" swing over the cross-slide.
Its mostly for turning large blocks of green wood. Somewhat surprisingly, the whole concept actually works!
I've done a few large platters and bowls, without lifting a chisel. However, there's complexity here that I'm still learning. Lots of interesting opportunities, once I get some more experience and my head wrapped around this.
