A correspondent, Rick Higgins, contacted us about a Rodgers power hacksaw he had recently acquired. This is the first machine of this type by Rodgers that we have seen. This saw is especially noteworthy and unusual because the action travels vertically on machined ways to lower the blade into the work, in addition to the usual horizontal cutting motion. I'm not aware of any other power hacksaw makes that us this system. The base for the machine is OEM.
This is from the owner: "I bought the saw from a guy that was getting rid of tools and household goods that his father had. He knew nothing about the saw. I saw an ad in craigslist for a garage sale with a power hacksaw listed with a bunch of other things, weeks after the sale was over. I took a chance and sent an email asking if he had sold the hacksaw and if he hadn't could he send me pictures. It hadn't been sold, he sent me pictures and I drove 175 miles and bought it. Everything is tight and from the looks of it I would never have guessed it was anywhere near that old. It is dusty but shows practically no wear. I plan to clean it up, get rid of that red paint, lube it and use it. Do you think I did OK? Thanks again. Rick." (My reply note to Rick: Yes you did good! Awesome machine, Great condition. But if it were me I'd keep the red paint on the guard.)
Unfortunately the only background material or paperwork we can locate on this machine is the patent application for the design. (See the Rodgers patent area if you want to look that over.) If anyone has any Rodgers catalogs, sales brochures or owners manuals which include information about this saw, we'd love to hear from you. Actually if anyone has any Rodgers paperwork at all, we'd love to hear from you and we'd appreciate it if you would considering sending us a digital PDF copy. We have a very limited selection of their documents in our archives.
Note: The estimated date of manufacture is really just a guess. The patent application was dated 1939. The power hacksaw is not included in the 1955 catalog we have on file. It is unknown what years this machine was available from Rodgers.
