I found this on a local C-list, and bought it for a couple of reasons - 1) To post here since there is not an example of this saw on the site; 2)To turn in to the Emerson recall, but mostly 3) to encourage folks to not buy this as a user saw!
I did not expect much when I got to the PO house, but the scream from the motor told me it was, in fact, a Universal motor. The motor brushes threw a bunch of sparks when the motor was turned on. This is definately a lightweight saw. I can pick it up easily with one hand, because there is not much cast iron in it. All of the metal except the motor housing is formed steel, and the motor housing doen't hold a magnet too well, so must be an alloy. The 2 HP is another example of HP exageration - I have bigger hand-held circular saws than the motor on this saw.
Apparently an example of value-engineering by Sears - they made better saws than this in the same year, but this must have been marketed to the occasional user - list price in 1972-73 catalog was $99, compared to 3-4X that much for the fully featured 10" RAS.
The photo showing a tag of Safety Sealed is pretty interesting, in light of the Emerson saws being recalled for safety.
