Comments:
A perfectly preserved, dual arbor, wood top shaper in the collection of the Maine State Museum in Augusta Maine. Note the matching jack shaft and wrought iron adjustable hold downs/ blade guards. It does not appear to be manufacturer marked although it is clearly a variant of Gear's "variety moulder". Certain design features would suggest that this machine was manufactured by someone other than the maker of similar machines seen at OWWM. Most notable is the shape of the frame between the spindles and the complexity of the gear train used to adjust them vertically. This manufacture chose to place the vertical adjustment screw at the bottom of the spindle yoke necessitating an intermediary shaft to transmit movement between it and the hand wheel.
The Maine State Museum is a must see for the enthusiast of old wood working machinery. One of their centerpieces is a multi story recreation of a typical small-scale water powered wood working shop. The collection includes an up and down saw mill, a Ricker circular saw mill, a clapboard mill, an early band saw, an early shaper, lathes, a planer blade sharpening machine, a stave saw, a barrel heading saw, a shingle mill, and a Ricker bolting mill.
ADMIN NOTE: This machine was identifed as being made by the S. K. Lovewell Co. as their Gears Variety Moulding Machine. See this ad from Carpentery and Building from 1882 and 1885: http://www.owwm.com/MfgIndex/image.asp?id=62
