Sewall (or Sewell) K. Lovewell seems to have bought out the business of A. S. & J. Gear & Co., probably in the late 1870s or early 1880s. He was in business until 1885, and probably for longer.

Information Sources

  • S. K. Lovewell received an 1857 patent for a gun spindle.
  • Article in 1881 Manufacturer & Builder about the "Eclipse" bandsaw. This bandsaw does not have the usual C-shaped frame; rather, the lower half of the C is replaced by an integral horizontal cast-iron surface that supports a wooden, non-tilting table. The lower wheel is mounted on a bracket bolted to the underside of the horizontal member.
  • The January 1882 Manufacturer & Builder article describes their "Gear's improved variety molding machine," which is a double-spindle shaper with open cast-iron base and a wooden top.
  • The August 1882 Manufacturer & Builder article shows their "double adjustable sawbench", a tablesaw with side-by-side blades.
  • Ad in December 1882 Manufacturer & Builder.
  • Ad in April 1885 Carpentry and Building. Ad is virtually identical to the 1882 ad.
