I had spoken to Dan Wyatt a few times about finding a metal lathe to replace my clapped out South Bend 9" , and he mentioned seeing a Sheldon lathe at HGR industrial surplus that he thought might fit the bill.I know a good idea when I hear it, so up to Cleveland I went.
Sure enough, upon inspection, I found the lathe to be in spectacular condition, other than the filthy white/gray brush on paint job. Thanks to bigjoe, I was able to find a motor that fit the rather unusual frame size, converting it to single phase. I spent last winter rebuilding it, and have found it to be an excellent machine; it's so quiet and accurate, it prompted my boss to buy a 12" Sheldon to replace our elderly S.B. "heavy 10".
Dan once told me about how his father,Emmett, was a part of the design team that built the first staggered wheel Lawnboy mower in the early fifties.I happen to own that model of mower, which is almost 60 years old and still works just fine , and thought it would be nice to paint the lathe the old Lawnboy colors, as a mark of respect for both of those men.
The inside of the headstock and underdrive cabinets are painted white to make it easier to see; thus far, it's still pretty white.
