I was buying a jointer from a party, and spotted this lathe in another corner of his garage workshop. The owner gave me permission to photograph the lathe for posting here.
The Conover lathe has the look of an early 1900 machine.
The name cast into the leg set is Conover Woodcraft, Parkman, Ohio. That suggests this lathe dates to before the change of ownership in 1989 moved the manufacturing to Mentor Ohio.
Although the lathe is equipped with a pair of 4 step V-Belt pulleys on the headstock and motor, the lathe is powered by a DC motor which is controlled by a Penta Power Mutli-Drive unit to provide variable speed.
