In the 1980s Ernie Conover developed and manufactured woodworking lathes. His company, Conover Woodcraft Specialties, Inc., manufactured and sold the lathes. They were located in Parkman, OH. The company, operated by the Conover family also operated workshops on turning, chairmaking, fiber art, etc., and in 1989 the Conovers sold the manufacturing arm to a Cleveland manufacturing company, which continued to manufacture the lathe as the Conover Lathe Division of Alpha Fabrication Inc., located in Mentor, OH. In 2002 this company went out of business and the Conover lathe is no longer manufactured. Since the early days of the Conover lathe the lathe market has become much more crowded and so it is somewhat unlikely that the Conover design will be resurrected.
The Conover lathe used beefy headstock and tailstock connected to a user-provided wooden bed. The swing was 16 inches. Heavy cast-iron legs were available.
