This saw was found for $8.00 at the New York Finger Lakes' area (State Route 90)annual 50-mile lawn sale. As an old outboard motor collector, I was drawn to the WIZARD brand -which Western Auto also featured on its high quality, typically Mercury-built 1940s-50s outboards. It should be noted that, though the base is fitted with a metal WIZARD/Western Auto circular arrow ID tag, the saw also sports a WESTCRAFT decal on the "head" or upper blade receiving portion of the main casting. During some of the retailer's history, there seems to be some mixing of the WESTCRAFT and WIZARD names in Western auto tools and other products, making it difficult to decipher which marque was supposed to be W-A's highest quality brand, vis-a-vis Sears' Craftsman vs. SEARS, DUNLAP, FULTON, COMPANION, et al. In any event, this saw appears to be of good quality, heavily constructed, and mechanically sound. It awaits a restoration, new blade, and belt/motor mate. I estimate it to be early 1950s, as a W-A ad displayed on vintagemachinery.org with a similar WIZARD tag has a 1952 date. This saw is noticeably different (in shape detail) than other scroll saws in the Western Auto section shown on the site as of August 2011.
