I purchased this jointer from a retiring cabinet builder in San Francisco. He purchased it from Schoenstein Organ Company in San Francisco several decades earlier. It has a 2 knife cutterhead that was supplied to Northfield as a "generic" from a company in Wisconsin. This machine was built before Northfield starting putting serial numbers on their jointers. Technically this is not a "Medium Duty" jointer that they currently make, it was just the 8" jointer back then. It's a beast with 74" bed length and weighing around 1,000lbs.
The cutterhead rides on babbitt bearings. There are oil reservoirs made out of vaseline jars (nice!) that supply the babbitt bearings with a constant supply of oil. There is an aftermarket guard on the machine which seems to work just fine.
The motor was bolted to the floor separately and drives the cutterhead via belts. It is a 3 phase 3HP motor made by Western Electric. It is about 3x the size and weight of my modern 3HP single phase motor on my TS. The belts are covered with some shop-made sheet metal guards and a painted-to-match plywood box covered the motor.
The PO explained the veneer on the fence was to smooth out some warpage and/or dings, there is a slight bend in one of the fence mounts that was shimmed flat with a few extra washers. Otherwise the machine is in fine shape.
