Comments:
I believe this machine started life as a buffer/grinder. Somewhere along the way the grinding wheel guard was removed and an arbor adapter/extension was added to the left side, possibly for a flap wheel or sanding drum. The adapter threads onto the original 7/8" arbor and has a 1.410" diameter shaft, and will accept an accessory up to 6" long. The original 7/8" arbor nut threads onto the adapter. The adapter also as a 1/2-13 left hand thread tapped into the end, possibly to receive a tapered arbor for a buffing wheel.

The local motor shop thought that the buffer dated from the 30's or early 40's based on the fact that it has fabric insulated windings in the stator.

Spec are as follows:
1 hp
220v 3ph
1750 rpm
37" end to end

This machine was given to my sons by a friend of mine. The boys and I disassembled it, regreased the bearings, stripped and repainted it, and reassembled it. Unfortunately one of the bearings has a rumble in it, so I'm going to pull it apart and replace all the bearings. Otherwise it runs very smoothly.
