Comments:
I saw the photo of this 1886 Connell and Dengler bandsaw in an article in Fine Woodworking on Woodworking Machines, Taunton Press, 1985. I thought it was a particularly beautiful machine and wanted to share it with other OWWMer’s. The photo and article were reprinted from “Mechanical Advantage: About woodworking machines, and a visit to Rockwell and Powermatic” by John Lively. Fine Woodworking, Issue #30, October 1981, pp. 68-72. Photographer John Lively.

"It ran with a ghostly silence, without the slightest whisper of mechanical noise or vibration – just a gentle, low-pitched whoosh as its wheels fanned the air." p. 68

"With its spiral-spoked wheels, its gracefully curved main frame, fluted column and contoured base, it looked more like sculpture than like a machine for cutting wood. There could be no doubt that its makers were as much concerned with the aesthetics of its form as with the smoothness of its operation." p. 68
