BICKFORD & CARRIER, INC., 427 DAVIS STREET (A continuation of page 1,728) Manufacturers of cutters for Chase turbines, tools for army ordnance districts, machine gage holders for GTD and more recently of sporting goods items, this firm dated back to 1908 when Oramel S. Bickford opened the Bickford Machine Company on Chapman street. He made two different automatic machines and a line of special tap-making machinery. He was joined in 1915 by Partner George A. Markwell and in 1917 they sold to GTD (Greenfield Tap & Die). In 1923, Bickford again struck off for himself, this time forming O. S. Bickford & Son Company at its 1953 location. Robert Bickford and his son-in-law, Howard P. Carrier, joined him in this venture. Carrier bought a half interest in 1940 and the name became Bickford & Carrier. A tool room and a welding room were added at that time. During World War II, the plant produced aircraft electrical parts, gun mounts, aircraft wing-trimming machines, submarine jigs and fixtures, all on sub-contracts.
