In the first half of the 20th century, this firm made a "patent pending" tilting arbor benchtop tablesaw. We have not been able to find a patent for the saw, nor have we been able to find much information on the company.

Information Sources

  • Thanks to Dave Trump for letting us know about a well preserved example of the Moorewood saw.
  • We have seen some unsourced web postings that the Moorewood saw was invented in 1939 by Theodore Kanstantine Checkos, and it "was the first tilting arbor tablesaw". That is nowhere close to true: for example, J. P. Grosvenor introduced a patent tilting arbor tablesaw in 1868.
  • Theodore Checkos of Los Angeles was granted several patents relating to welding electrodes, dated roughly 1945 to 1956. He was also granted a 1938 patent for a taxicab sign, and a 1939 patent for an illuminated license plate frame. We have not found any patent related to a tablesaw, nor could we find any other likely patent from that era for a tilting arbor saw.
  • A web search turned up various publications, dated 1946 to 1958, that mention welding kits from Moorewood Electric & Manufacturing Co. The company address was 1718 E. Florence Ave., Los Angeles 1, Calif.
