Founded in 1916, the United States Machine Tool Co. took over the plant and business of the American Milling Machine Co. The newly formed company continued manufacture of milling machines, including a hand miller.

In 1947, the Ransohoff Co. acquired the company, which became the US Machine Tool Division of Ransohoff Co. Just one year later that division was merged with the newly acquired Burke Machine Tool Co. and became U.S. Burke Machine Tool Co. In 1967 Houdaille Industries, Inc. acquired U. S. Burke Machine Tool Co. In the late 1970s the Houdaille conglomerate flamed out in a leveraged buyout gone wrong. As far as we know the U. S. Burke milling-machine products disappeared from the marketplace.

The company often cast U.S. Machine Tool on their machines and also went under the name U. S. Burke Machine Tool Division. They manufactured the "Quartet" milling machine, which was a combination machine that allowed for horizontal, vertical, angular, and universal milling.
