Nichols & Langworthy Machine Co. was founded in 1835 by Gardner Nichols and Joseph Langworthy. Manufacture of steam engines began ca 1860. By 1890, the steam engines were being sold through a wholly owned subsidiary, New York Safety Steam Power Co.
